Summers in Reno and the towns around Lake Tahoe are so nice you never want to go inside. Unless you have allergies or you need walls to contain your kid so you can rest a bit. If you can stay out a little longer, you’ll want to check out one of the free family movies in the park might be a good wind down on a cool summer evening.

Reno is Artown Movies in the Park

Every Friday evening in July for the annual Artown festival movies are shown in the amphitheater at Winfield park at 8:00 PM. This years lineup includes E.T., A Night At The Opera, Strictly Ballroom and Grease. Movies for this are usually old, or older and mostly are general audience, not specifically kid. I have a great story of seeing Citizen Kane here with a verbose and boring art history professor and a drunk shirtless native american. But that’s for another blog… Check out the Artown site for more info.

If you are up for a marathon family evening, come at 5:00 PM for the free Rollin’ on the River concert and stay through the movie. There is usually concessions and you can bring food of your own.

Movies under the peaks of Squaw Valley

This free outdoor movie series stares every Thursday evening at 8:30 in squaw valley CA. The movies will be in the events plaza in the village at squaw valley. Here is the press release with the schedule.

Commons Beach, Tahoe City

There will be weekly free screening of family-friendly movies every Wednesday night at dusk during the summer. Bring a picnic dinner, no concessions sold. Commons beach is on North Lake Blvd. behind the Fire Station, Tahoe City

I might try to get my dude out to one of these this summer. Technically, his bed time is 8:00, but there is a chance he would fall asleep during the show. Are there any movies in the park where you live? Have I missed any in Reno Tahoe?
