Lately when my son goes to bed he has to turn the stars on. Of course he has the turtle star projector, which you must go buy right this very minute. Sometimes, when he has a surfeit of energy left from the day he turns it on, and jumps on the bed shaking it back and forth shouting, “crazy turtle!” as the stars paint frenetic paths across the ceiling.

Private Moon

I found this amazing photo blog by Russian artist Leonid Tishkov that my son will love to flip through before bed tonight (after crazy stars). The images feature a magical moon that has come to earth to interact with her human friends and a short poem. Here’s my favorite:

The sky is near.
Open the attic and you’ll see
there next to the wasp nest
rings the blinding light
of the lost moon

This visual poem project is pretty incredible. Here’s the story that told with the photos and poems:

“Private Moon” is a visual poem telling the story of a man who met the Moon and stayed with her for the rest of his life. In the upper world, in fact in the attic of his own house, he saw the Moon falling off from the sky. Once she was hiding from the Sun in a dark and damp tunnel. But the passing trains frightened her. Now she came to this man’s house. Having wrapped the Moon with warm blankets he treated her with autumn apples, gave her a cup of tea, and when she got well he took her in his boat across
the dark river to the high bank overgrown with moon pine-trees. He descended into the lower world dressed in the clothes of his deceased father and then returned from there lighting up his path
with his personal Moon. Crossing the borderline between the two worlds across a narrow bridge, immersed in a dream and taking care of this heavenly creature, the man became a mythological
being living in a real world as in a fairytale. [Private Moon]

Moon Stories

Leonid Tishkov also has a children’s book about the moon called “The Boy and The Moon.” It’s only in Russian now, but It looks wonderful.

Cosmos Moon, by Devin Scillian is a another book along these lines. It tells the story of a boy named Cosmo who makes friends with the moon. We don’t have a print copy of this, but my son likes to read it on the Reading Rainbow iPad App. Definitely check out that app. It’s $9 per month for full access to the stories, but seems to be worth it to us.
