Today I’m taking an Amtrak Train from Reno, NV to Bakersfield, CA with my son. Just the two of us. He’s 2 years old and this our first adventure together. The trip takes the California Zephyr over the scenic ascent of Donner Summit to Sacramento, CA and then we transfer to the San Joaquin train south to Bakersfield, CA.

I’ll be posting photos of our train adventure to The Gizzard Stone Instagram profile, and Twitter. But for now, I hope you’ll enjoy this set of train videos I gathered last night while watching Star Trek TNG Re-Runs.

Grand Canyon Railway

Grand Canyon Railway is powering its classic steam engine with waste vegetable oil, collected from the restaurants at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and from Williams. The run occurs September 19, 2009.

Train Snow Plow

Sometimes you can spot a locomotive snow plow parked on the tracks in Truckee, CA. It’s a rotary snow plow that the Union Pacific Railroad uses to clear the tracks over Donner Summit, CA. Pretty impressive piece of machinery.

5 Engine Freight Train

The cool thing about trains is that when the train gets heavy, you can just add more engines to pull it. Here is a video showing a 5 engine train.

Round House

This one shows a bunch of locomotives at a railway celebration. The first cool thing is an engine turning in the round house. Since trains can’t turn as nimbly as a car, they have to pick them up and turn them on a special set of track that turns like a record player.

This film can also be seen on my DVD “railway celebrations Stassfurt and Nossen.” In Stassfurt was held in June 2011, a beautiful train hard. On site were steam locomotives of different series, some of which were also under steam. You could make commuting in the cab of a freight train and rode for the visitors to photo-and video recordings allow. As a guest was then a special train, by the oil-fired locomotive 41 096, which impressed her with an impressive soundscape burner. []

The video goes on to show a lot of other cool train action!

Pat Metheny  Group “Last Train Home”

This one is a bunch of cool train footage set to Pat Metheny Groups “Last Train Home.”

Chinese 2-8-2 Mikado #142

Looks like this video was from a special run for train enthusiasts to take photos.

New York Susquehanna & Western #142 is a Class SY 2-8-2 Mikado-type 2-8-2 steam locomotive built in 1989 by the TangShan Locomotive Work in the Peoples Republic of China. It is among the last steam locomotives built in the entire world! The Passenger cars which travel with the NYS&W # 142 are former Long Island Railroad commuter coaches built in the 1950s and beautifully restored in the 1990s. [digibug.deviantart]

Steam, Diesel and Electricity

This train has three engines with three different modes of power.
