We are lucky enough to live in a rural area in Reno where we have 7 acres to explore before dinner every evening. Sure we eat a little bit late. But fun comes first when the darkness of daylight savings is bearing down on you.

When I look back at my childhood I see trees. I’m climbing rocks, jumping streams and worrying about dirtying my clothes and getting in trouble. We spent time as a family in the mountains. My dad drug me on long hikes that ended at waterfalls, high country peaks or desolate holes in the ground. Experiences I’ve spent my whole adult life repeating. Experiences I am in the process of replicating for my young son.

But like the lotto, you got to be in it to win it. If you never go out into the wilderness, you’ll never know the sublime magic of solitude in nature, getting caught in a flash rain storm or the meditation of long tromp through the woods. Without wilderness, you’ll never know it’s there. The infographic below from The Wilderness Society, shows some of the benefits of Wilderness to our culture, health and youth.
