Someone finally did it. They made likable wallpaper just like in the Roald Dahl Classic book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the equally a classic Gene Wilder film, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

If you remember the scene then you remember the bit of wisdom Wanka bestows upon an impudent Veruca Salt when she protests the existance of snozzberries, “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.”  Click the image to view the clip from the movie.

Willy Wanka: We are the Music Makers
Willy Wanka: We are the Music Makers

The line is one of my favorites from the movie for the sentiment if conveys and the forceful, dark way that Wilder delivers it. The line comes from the poem ‘Ode,’ by Arthur O’Shaughnessy.

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;—
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

You can read the first three stanzas here, but there are another 6 in the full poem. And read about the influence the poem has had on artists all over the world.

The film was recently remade with Johnny Dep: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I haven’t seen it yet. I’ve heard it’s good.

  • Tim Burton’s take is good in a Tim Burton way … bright, dark, creepy and disturbing.  No lickable wallpaper though.
