Artist Rubbishmonkey has created a surreal set of art prints that feature animals, in humanoid form, in space suits. They are completely ridiculous, but completely cool. You can purchase prints of them for $12.00, which is such a good price it’s completely ridiculous NOT to order one!

My favorite is the 10 point Deer in a space suit holding a 1 point helmet. Click here to view the rest of Rubbishmonlkey’s space animal prints.

Animals in Space

Manned space flight was a huge deal about 50 years ago. First getting a man in space, then getting a man to orbit the Earth, then getting a man to walk on the moon. But before it had been done, little was known about the effects that rocket travel and zero gravity would have on human beings.

The first life forms sent into space ahead of humans was fruit flies sent aboard the V2 rocket in 1947 to test the effects of radiation at high altitudes. The flies made it to the edge of space before being ejected to parachute back down where they were recovered alive.

Two years later NASA launched Rhesus monkeys into space. Some of those trips didn’t go so well. Following them were mice and dogs.

A dog was the first animal to orbit the Earth. Laika, meaning “barker” in Russian, orbited the Earth in the Soviet Spacecraft Sputnik 2.

Pigs in Space

While NASA has never sent pigs into space, this is what it might be like if they ever did:
